The Spiritual Genius of Thomas Merton; Franciscan Media, Cincinnati, Ohio; 2014

Franciscan Media sought an appropriate book to celebrate the first century of Merton’s birth (January 31, 1915). They had in mind the many people less aware of Merton’s work and yet responsive to transcendent love and also social justice. Dedication to God was as important as non-violence with one another.

They asked the author of The Human Journey of Thomas Merton (Doubleday, 1982) to revise that publication 32 years later, with appropriate attention to both dimensions of spiritual life.

Paul M. Pearson, archivist of the Thomas Merton Center in Louisville, found the volume “second to none” in its analysis of Merton. He agreed with Jonathan Montaldo (archivist emeritus of the “Thomas Merton International Center”) that the work showed “unusual sympathy with the inner meaning of the monk’s literary career.”

The original book began a dialogue with Thomas Merton enthusiasts. This book is a reflection on the character and quality of that dialogue. It brings that conversation into synthesis, evaluation and meditative reflection.
